The Difference Between 1300 Numbers and 1800 Numbers

1300 Numbers (Also Called Local Call Numbers)

Calls to a 1300 number from a local landline caller that you answer on your landline include FREE talk time minutes.

The caller: pays the cost of a local call from any fixed line phone anywhere in Australia. (Note that if the caller is using a mobile phone, they will pay a rate that is determined by their mobile service provider.)

Account Holder: receives the first minutes FREE for calls originating from a local fixed line phone and terminating on your fixed landline. After the FREE talk time minutes, our low call rates apply. Free minutes vary depending on plans, with our most popular 1300 number plan providing 30 free minutes.

1800 Numbers (Also Called Toll Free or Free Call Numbers)

The caller: FREE from any fixed line phone anywhere in Australia. (Note that if the caller is using a mobile phone, they will pay a rate that is determined by their mobile service provider.)

Account Holder: the free talk time component does not apply. Otherwise, the same as 1300 numbers.

Which Type of Number is Right for You?

It really comes down to who is going to be phoning you.

If the majority of your calls are going to be local, landline-to-landline, the 1300 number is the way to go. The free talk time component is likely to cover most calls, so you'll often pay little more than your monthly service fee.

If the majority of calls are NOT going to be local, landline-to-landline, there is very little difference cost-wise between 1300 numbers and 1800 numbers. In that case, you might decide to go for a 1800 number so that your customers can call you for free.

Another thing to consider is which type (1300 number or 1800 number) has the best number/phoneword available for your business. Numbers that spell words or have repeating patterns are easier for your customers to remember. For example, Alltel uses 1300 ALLTEL (1300 255 835).
